I have always liked the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, especially since I am all about supporting alumni of my K-12 school Friends Academy (drummer Brian Chase was class of ’96)… however, never before had I seen them perform live. A few weeks ago, a friend of mine brought me to the friends and family concert they played over at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. I can’t stop listening to them now…

Karen O. is by far not only an extremely talented artist, but also an amazing performer. Her spontaneity and fearlessness kind of reminds me of a modern day (and perhaps a less tame) Iggy Pop. The one thing that caught me off guard that night was an acoustic rendition of their beloved song Maps, a song which my friend claims they never get tired performing. It was relaxing and fulfilling for sure. No computer, no phone (I cheated once because I had to share with people how amazing the sky was on Saturday night), and sadly, no camera. I did have my music, books, and journal of course. Below is a list of the places we visited, love, and the things I did:

Beach: Little Plains Beach- At the end of our old road. I have been going to this beach since I was two years old.

Sightseeing: Montauk Point Lighthouse – We climbed the rocks all the way around the base of the lighthouse to get to the beach on the other side.

I read: Slaughterhouse Five by Vonnegut

I saw: 5 Shooting Stars, Jupiter and the most amazing sky I have seen in a really long time

I listened to: Radiohead, Whitest Boy Alive, Regina Spektor, The Cranberries

Sunday Breakfast: Babettes, East Hampton (get the brioche cinnamon swirl french toast)

Saturday Dinner: Bamboo, East Hampton

Coffee: The Golden Pear

Candy: The Fudge Company, Southampton

Best Burger: Barrister’s, Southampton

Favorite Old Establishment: Sip N’ Soda (burgers/milkshakes) which is an old fashioned diner that has been around since 1968. I have so many memories here!

Favorite months to visit: Mid-June, September, October, November… If you haven’t visited in the fall, you are missing out.

There are days when I definitely want to run far far away from the city. Sometimes I do hop onto the LIRR back to old Southampton where we used to call home… pass out on the beach… Or, sometimes, I try to go as far East as I can possibly go (Montauk, naturally)…

 The above picture is a place: a place where the city meets a field of grass and the water at the same time.  I obviously go here when I don’t have time for the two hour train ride… Besides, an eight minute walk from home isn’t that bad.

I have to say I am blessed to live so close to this spot. It isn’t exactly Tribeca, but more like Battery Park:  Chambers street is its border to the North, and Vessey street its border to the South. Views of the uptown skyline as well as of the Statue of Liberty can be seen just by sitting on the lawn, and I have many a times watched games of soccer as well as games of tag on jet skis. You can smell the water (which is not gross- but rather makes you feel as though you are definitely not in Manhattan). I can sit and read or write or sleep for hours at peace. Of course, a picnic is always a necessity: make sure to  pick up your cheese, crackers, and fruit at Whole Foods just three avenues East.

   For kids, there is a playground– and me being a child at heart naturally have to spend at least fifteen minutes on the swing set each time I visit.  For the adults, handball courts  as well      as several basketball courts serve to keep those more active occupied. Definitely find out when the free concerts are being held in the summer: they are definitely a wonderful way to end        the day.

    The park is opened until midnight. Take my advice and go a half hour before the sunset starts. Bring wine, cheese, and your iPod. You won’t regret it.
